I was interested in the “Women on the Move” panel discussion. Two local business women shared their stories of owning their own businesses. One piece of advice I heard that was particularly inspiring was to think, “Everyone here loves me” whenever you walk into a room. This will boost your confidence and allow you to handle whatever situation you are faced with.

I used this advice recently when I had to give a last minute presentation at work. I was not feeling
100% prepared but rather than panic I thought, “Everyone here thinks I’m awesome and they will understand if I don’t give the best presentation”. My presentation wasn’t perfect but it came across a lot better than it would have if I hadn’t felt the” love”.

My "speak up or sell out" moment

I've been thinking a lot about the "Authenticity" chapter of our curriculum this week. A glaring example of this concept came up in my job, and it threw me into a career-existential crisis. Decisions were being made at the executive level that would shape my work, and the direction of the organization, for the next year and possibly beyond. When I first learned about them, I tried very hard to fully understand what might have been driving the decision-making process and really get my head around what it meant for my team and for me, personally. After several internal deliberations, I found myself very conflicted.

I realized very quickly that the work I do is very much driven by my personal mission and values. It's much more than just a job, and my role as a leader is both to help others believe deeply in what it is I'm working toward and also to help them connect to that mission and set of values in order to find a way to make a difference.

I was encouraged by my boss (someone I regard as an amazing leader and mentor) to stand up for what I believed in and spend a little bit of my professional/social capital to get my point across to people who could change the direction of the ship. Her advice was to stick to the facts, trust that logic and sound values were on my side, and try to keep unnecessary emotion out of it as much as possible. That last part was pretty challenging given the deep-seated feelings I had about the issues at hand.

In the end, my point was well heard by the decision-makers and I felt tremendous resolve from choosing to speak up.

Team

I am enjoying getting to know my team. They literally meant it in terms of making money. But, I wanted to share how that principle applied with Meals on Wheels and our company (and there really will be a point to this that applies to the class). In November 2009, a few of us were talking about 'past lives' and how we'd done Meals on Wheels. I decided to contact Senior Services, and the idea of volunteer drivers seemed kind of new to how Snohomish County operates its program. But, we all went into it together, and we signed up for weekly delivery. We set up a voluntary sign up sheet, and the same folks started out signing up. Slowly we got up to about 6 regulars, and a half dozen sometimers. A different employee caught on to what we were doing, and informed the team that we were eligible for Campbell's Angel Points, which contributes $500 for every 25 hours you volunteer with a charity. Long story short, they submitted the teams hours, and last week we were able to present 3 $500 checks to SSSC, AND because of the total hours of the team for 2010, we were able to present a check for $6,000. Needless to say, Martha and Jane (at SSSC) were surprised and giddy over the events. The point, and how I relate leadership to all of this, is that small contributions individually, when cumulated is enormous. Leadership is about getting as many small contributions as possible, to have an enormous impact.

Gratitude

Yesterday, I went to the final meeting on our group project for the class of 2011 (best class ever.) The closing of a chapter always makes me look back at what came before, and so, as I read the section on
gratitude, I have the last nine months in my head.
I came to Leadership Snohomish excited to learn about the community I live and work in, and that my child is growing up in, and also apprehensive- feeling I had nothing to contribute in terms of actual 'leadership' (aptitude or ability.)
The first day's survey of styles revealed- unsurprisingly- my own tendency toward introversion. While I
didn't think I needed a class to tell me this about myself, I was interested to begin to look at new opportunities in working with people with different innate styles.
I was somewhat surprised when put into project groups to find myself with people who also (to varying degrees) tended toward introversion. The project we were assigned- a feasibility study for Bridgeways looking at expansion- was also the one that I felt least comfortable about. Over the coming weeks and months I found myself working with a group of incredibly intelligent, compassionate and, above all, humorous individuals. Sarri said she picked the groups at random, but I think
there may be more to it than that. Our group was supportive, efficient, effective and able to laugh at ourselves. I am incredibly grateful to have had the chance to get to know all of them and hope to count them among my friends through all our future roles in Snohomish County.

In gratitude,
Nicole

Reflections on Health and Human Services

I couldn't have been more thrilled about the topics discussed during this particular education day. For two reasons: 1) Greater insight into some of the hardships taking place in Snohomish County, 2) Leadership and the importance of human services were discussed as going hand in hand.

1) I first became acquainted with the violence and hardships that were and are happening at both a national and international level some years ago and remember finding it so disheartening and so upsetting that I wrote a few letters to Congress. After reading material such as "Half the Sky," and other relevant works I have been inspired to focus on women empowerment in my next career, so I found this education day to be very informational as it touched on many of the different components I should consider being aware of.

2) The interpersonal component is either missed or mentioned briefly in much of the Leadership and management curriculum because there is always such a high focus on power and money. I sincerely believe that often times caring for one another becomes foreign and lost in the shuffle, at least from my perspective. For example, I have taken countless courses on management, marketing, accounting, finance, etc. where the focus is on maximizing profits and enhancing the bottom line and can only count on my hand a class or two geared toward expanding on the social dynamic in relation to being sensitive to people's needs and how to treat people like people and social responsibility owed to the community. Afterall, it would make no sense to discuss community building without acknowledging some of the hardships experienced by many in the community.

I just couldn't help but be reminded of a quote spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King that, "power without love is abusive and reckless, while love without power is sentimental and anemic." Given this quote there clearly must be a balance between power and care for humanity especially when focusing on Leadership within a given community. Thank you LSC! I am grateful to impart a deeper knowledge of some of the travesties happening in the Snohomish County area.

January

At our most recent education day, we had several representatives from the local business community present on a wide variety of topics. The local economy was a central theme, and it was interesting to hear different viewpoints. Clearly, times are challenging, with Snohomish County unemployment trending slightly higher than the national average. Several business owners told us about their personal experiences in having to lay off employees and struggling to keep their businesses solvent. Despite that, there was a tenacity and resilient spirit that shone through. Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Director Bob Drewel was most optimistic as he pointed out how global our region is in its approach. He indicated that the Puget Sound remains vibrant and innovative, and is better positioned than many areas of the US to pull ahead as the economy recovers.

Our discussion topic for the day was sponsorship, the willingness to advocate for a cause or idea, with the determination to move beyond words to action. What struck me about this was just how important it is for all of us to be more actively engaged in our communities, especially in challenging economic times. Leadership Snohomish County has broadened my perspective considerably, and introduced me to several ways I can be a more engaged citizen and sponsor.

Government & Public Policy in Snohomish County

December's Education Day is on "Government & Public Policy in Snohomish County." We started out the day at Snohomish County Chamber having a mock exercise on KRKO Towers. Class members took on varies roles as council members, activist, citizens, business owners, county clerk, and policy analysist. It is a very delicate balance indeed for council members to find a position that will address concerns from all sides.

After the mock exercise, we had an amazing line-up of speakers: Peter Camp from Snohomish County, addressing major concerns that are facing the County; John McCoy from 38th Legislative District on Understanding State and Tribal Issues; John Lovick from Snohomish County Sheriff on Leadership, and his personal stories of why he ran for office; Tim Eyman on the Initiative Process; and Luck Loeffler, Rick Larsen's Legislative aide, on Federal Government, and of course our very own Sarri Gilman on one of the Leadership qualities - Purpose.

The speakers not only provided excellent personal stories of how they took on their leadership role, but also offered us valuable opportunities to ask questions, which all of us took full advantage of.

For me personally, Sarri's topic on "Purpose" really rounded off the day. Every one of these successful people have one thing in common. They are all very passionate about their cause, whatever that maybe. The passion and energy that they all carry are undeniable. They all have found their own calling, or their "Authentic Purpose."

One of the many reasons we are all participating in this class is to learn how to be more effective as a community leader. In order to be effective, we need to have answers to three very important questions before a cause can be served effectively: Why, How, and What.

Why are we doing "this"? How do we achieve "this"? And at the end of day, What is the result that we want?
What's your purpose? Have you found your answers to all three questions?

If so, Congratulations, because you are well on your way. If not, stay tuned, as we will all learn how to find ours, in the remainder of this program.

However, in the meantime, we need to pay attention, and learn how to "listen." As Sheriff John Lovick said, the "Right words at the Right Time" will take hold when you are ready.

Until next time.....

Grace Kane

Law, Justice and Leadership

The theme for November's educational adventures has been "Law and Justice," and I've tried to take full advantage of the opportunities Leadership SC has organized for us.

During one of those opportunities yesterday -- a ride along with the Snohomish PD -- I was reminded that law enforcement and academics often see themselves on opposite political sides. Academics like me - I am a member of the Edmonds Community College faculty - certainly have an unflatteringly "liberal" reputation. Ouch!

After hearing representatives from Corrections, from various sheriff and police offices, from public defenders, and from Juvenile and Drug Courts, however, lament the effects of our state's budget crisis, I'm convinced that we, as public servants, are more alike than unalike.

This claim was met with resistance when I floated it yesterday, so let me explain the similarities I see:

1. All of us working in the community as employees of Washington state possess education and training that make us professionals at the jobs we're entrusted to do. We want to serve the segment of the public that requests our help, and we want to achieve success and growth in our own personal careers.

2. We are also all regularly called to perform services that exceed and expand our baseline job descriptions. The officers I worked with yesterday did not simply pull over speeders and apprehend crooks. They built relationships with teenagers and encouraged them to stay in school. They provided mediation and sympathy for people in crisis. They took a personal and active interest in the safety and health of people suffering from mental illness. These are daily facets of my job, as well.

3. We are increasingly asked to do our jobs, and more!, with decreasing resources. And our salaries are the smallest part of this complaint. My limitations in serving my students mirror the limitations faced by all of the representatives of the "law and justice" community we've heard from this month. We all know that prevention and crisis support are far more effective than penalties and neglect, and we know that these services require funding! Say what you will about taxes, but all of our institutions rely on them...

I know it's not polite to discuss politics, but doing so once this common ground is explicitly established makes for a productive, if not vote- or political-party-changing, conversation. I am grateful to be reminded of this.

Reflection

Prior to the first day of our retreat, I had not sat down and thoughtfully reflected on my strengths and personal styles in working with others or as a leader. Unlike many of my colleagues in the best class ever, the LIFO Survey we took that day was my first in-depth analysis at my style. And while I know everyone in that room took something away from the survey, I fully recognize that for me, it was an energizing and enlightening experience.

Let's face it. There are some facts about ourselves that we're not very quick to recognize. Then there are strengths that we may know we have, but we've never taken the time to weigh or evaluate as compared to our other strengths. That day, I was clearly struck by my strengths and weaknesses. I was able to draw connections to my day-to-day tendencies and recognized that, yep, those results were spot-on. Quite eye-opening.

The LSC retreat also made me realize how much you can learn with simple, straight-forward conversations and tasks. The simple act of working silently with teammates to piece together puzzle shapes in geometric patterns was a great experiment in communication. I found that tasks, such as these puzzles, coupled with simple interviews of my colleagues in the best class ever, were remarkable ways to make connections.

I walked out of the retreat with a level of enthusiasm I had not anticipated. The projects are fascinating and worthy of our best work, and while I must admit they seem daunting, I can't wait to see what happens next. Looking forward to what the next six months will bring!

Best Class Ever

Why in the world would a Leadership Snohomish County Class want to say that their class was the "Best class ever?"
How did we reach the point where this would be a distinctive character of each of the groups that participated?
Here are some random thoughts that may help answer this:
1. I heard about this course from a Chamber of Commerce meeting. The concept of developing community leaders by grouping together non-profits, students, businesses, and government seemed like an excellent way to get a diversity of thought and focus to achieve a common goal. So, I asked around and found several people at my workplace that had been part of the program. WOW!
I did not expect the response I got from them, overwhelmingly geniuine, heartfelt emotion of having been part of something that was greater than themselves.
2. So, I show up to this class with some mixed emotions. I am not sure how I will fit in, and what I will get out of it. And once again, WOW!
Within the first 2 hours of the meeting, I had the opportunity to meet with some amazing people. Conversation flowed smoothly, depth of character and breadth of thought was readily apparent each time I got the chance talk to someone new or relate to them in an exercise. I went home after the first day and could not contain my excitement. I explained to my wife and kids that I had been able to be in the company of people that "cared" about their community and wanted to make a difference, not because someone told them to do it, but because they wanted to do it.
3. And, coming into the next day it was time to get the group and see where our challenges would lie. The different aspects of the projects and what they could do for the comunity struck a chord with eveyone in the room. After having been in the first day, I knew there was no way to not have a good group to meet those projects head on. The key was how well would we "gel" into a team. WOW!
Even though we had only a short time to go through our thoughts, it was clear that our team was going to be determined, fun and work hard to achieve any of the projects.

In taking in these random thoughts, a pattern became very clear to me. Each individual wanted to give of themselves for their team, class and community. I am sure the classes that preceded ours achieved that goal, and in doing so, became "The best class ever." A title worth fighting for, not for our own recognition, but for our community.
Can't wait to continue the journey with my team and class!

I wanna be like Mike...

Who do I wanna be like?

This was the question that ran though my head when instructed to "Think of a time when you willingly followed the direction of someone you admired and respected as a leader" at Leadership Snohomish County's Fall Retreat.

Millions of Gatorade drinking, NBA dreaming, neighborhood court playing youth wanted to be like Michael Jordan in the early 90's. I'm sure some of us still do.
It's true that many consider MJ to be the best basketball player of all time, but did that make him a leader? Maybe, maybe not.

Did Mike make his team members feel confident, capable, imaginative and creative? Were they calm in his presence? Did they feel like they had skills and abilities to bring to the table? Maybe, maybe not.

Did Michael give his team members 100% of his attention and focus when meeting? Did he give praise and encouragement, tell them to run with it when they had an idea that was outside of the box? Did he work hard and care about his job? Was he honest? Did he recognize when it was time to let go, and encourage team members to move on to other opportunities when there was a chance for personal growth? Maybe, maybe not.

I couldn't possibly tell you if Michael Jordan did all of these things with his team. But I can tell you my first non-profit agency supervisor did. And she was a leader. I am a bit embarrassed about how little I knew about the topics we have covered so far in the Education Days. I have loved everything about the education days, it's my favorite part of the program so far.
I am also learning that I have so much to give my community. I have always "given my all" to my employer and have been proud of what I have accomplished and how I have helped at work, but I have stopped there. I just never realized that I could branch out and do good things for others that I may know nothing about. It just takes commitment, hard work, kindness, the things we all have and can give.

Bonnie Eckley
Current Class member 2010

Leadership Class Project in Process

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v15.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D3ce09dc418f27731%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330224037%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D5A5B78A181E616DFD11389C0F8CF25A8EC32CB4B.52BB0E180DCDF4F93326D06D981C65A201DAA53A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D3ce09dc418f27731%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dw37-05EOGtUI-VutHESMNQcQ4JI&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" /> What a treat! At the end of our Business and Economic Development Education Day, I was cleaning up our cups , and packing up to go home. Barry Smith, from the Future of Flight came into the room and said, "Do you want to see something cool?" He brought me and Marc Gerogadis, and Bill DeSelms (Two LSC alumni) onto the flight deck of the Future of Flight building. We had a private showing of the 787 Dreamliner landing. Here's our baby!! Great to hear from former addict and see the success this program is having."

26 members of the Leadership Class attend the Retreat

The Leadership Class of 2010 spent two days getting to know each other and learning more about their own leadership styles. This has been a whirlwind year (well, rather 8 months!). I have really enjoyed my LSC experience. I had the opportunity to meet and learn from fabulous people. This year has been full of challenges for everyone across the country with the economy, companies laying off employees in record numbers and foreclosure rates at all time highs. Even with all the negative forces around us, our Leadership Education days stayed upbeat and positive. They were the bright part of my month because I knew that I would see some familiar people who would help me find the good points to focus on.
The people who plan the education days put their heart and soul into them and it shows. They are fabulous. Each day seemed to be better than the previous one. The speakers were very engaging and kept out interest.

So what have I learned from this year? A LOT! When I began the program last September, I was fairly new to the area so really had no idea what to expect or even what types of services were available in this area. Participating in LSC has given me an awareness that would have taken me years to get on my own. I now feel like I am part of this great community and am anxious to get and stay involved. The needs are great and abundant so there is plenty of opportunity to get involved.

I know every class feels like they are the BEST class ever and ours was no different! I truly believe I was in the best class for me. The people I met will forever be in my heart because of the great way they made me feel each and every month. It was amazing to see a group of strangers become so close in such a short amount of time. We may all come from different backgrounds, different lifestyles, different careers, yet we all got along and had fun in this common arena.

In closing, I have to say a little about Sarri. She was awesome. She saw something in me that prompted her to choose me from a stack of applicants and for that I am eternally grateful. This has been a wonderful experience for me. Sarri has inspired me to be a better me ALWAYS. She may have a small voice but that is only because her heart is so big it takes up all the room. Thank you Leadership Snohomish County for making me a better me. I am off to make the changes I have always wanted to see in the world and the credit will go to you for believing in me when I did not always believe in myself.

Health and Human Services Day

This was a very emotion-packed day for me on so many levels. I did not expect the day to be so emotionally draining yet enlightening. One thing I know for sure is that there is a great need for funds in so many areas. I truly feel blessed to be in a position to help others. The tour of the VOA Food Bank was enlightening. It amazes me everytime I meet the people who work and volunteer their time in these locations. It is very hard to go to work and have a bad attitude after seeing them in action. What do I have to complain about? I have a nice home, food in my pantry and clothes to wear. I also have a job ( for the time being).

I was amazed when I saw the magnificent cancer center. What a jewel to have right here in Everett. The team that developed that wonderful facility had such attention to detail. What a pleasant place to go during one of the most difficult times in a person's life. I felt at peace the moment we stepped into the facility. It is clear to see that a lot of healing takes place there.

The Domestic Violence video made it hard to hold back the tears. What a powerful message we heard from that video " You're Not Better Than Me."

I look forward to these education days each and every month because they just keep getting better and better. I have learned so much from the people who are in the program with me and also from the presentations that I have seen. I have worked for the City of Everett for many years and appreciated learning the "bigger picture" in regards to Snohomish County government. I realized how little I knew about many of the County's functions and I was amazed with the information shared by Tracie Stevens regarding the Tulalip Tribes. As was the case after the first Education Day, I walked away with a much better understanding of our County and the many types of government operations.

Homeless Shelter Room Renovation Project Update

Happy New Year! On behalf of the THSRRP, ("Team Homeless Shelter Room Renovation Project"), I wanted to update you on our project. As a reminder our project is to renovate some, the number is currently undetermined at this time and dependent on donations, of the rooms used by families at the Interfaith Family Shelter in Everett. The shelter provides 90-120 days of emergency shelter for families. It survives on an extremely limited budget. Homelessness continues to increase, with the largest population being that of single women and two-parent families with children. When families are homeless it threatens the overall health of our community. In Snohomish County the lack of affordable housing is one of many reasons families become homeless. At the Interfaith Family Shelter they strive to go beyond providing a place to stay. They strive to break the cycle of homelessness, and rebuild lives. Families participate in life skills classes as well as children's educational, developmental and recreational programs.

Our team has spent time with the Interfaith Shelter staff identifying and prioritizing their needs as well as time as a team brainstorming and planning. We have learned that their greatest need is for beds and mattresses. The more beds we can fit in to a room, comfortably, the better! We have the potential to expand the number of families the shelter serves if we can maximize the number of beds in each room. That would be so exciting to actually contribute to increasing the number of homeless families served in Snohomish County. We hope to add some additional improvements to the project scope such as sink/vanities, carpeting and paint, depending on our fundraising and product donation efforts. We have developed a draft project scope we hope to finalize the first week of January. Our fundraising and product donation efforts will kick off in early January.

How can you help? You'll be hearing from us soon as we launch our fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts. We want your ideas, names of contacts that could be helpful, donations, connections you have with organizations who may be interested in assisting us, etc. This is a project that many can participate in and make a direct difference on homeless families in Snohomish County.

For more information about our project or the Interfaith Family Shelter you can contact anyone from our project team. Our team members are: Stacy Vance, Keith Kubie, Heather Coleman, Robert Waddle and myself.

Lori Cummings

Let's make 2009 an Awesome Leadership Year

As I prepare for our next LSC Education Day on Business and Economic Development in Snohomish County, I cannot help but think about the current issues facing the country and our own area. The call for leadership is screaming across the headlines throughout our country. With the mortgage crisis, the national bailout of select financial institutions, the auto makers crisis, and the continued Wall Street roller coaster, it is easy to find yourself overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness. In such times we tend to look for a savior - one individual, or a small group of individuals, who will ride in valiantly on a white horse and rescue us from our current reality. Let me snap you back to reality!!! The time for sitting back and passively hoping for someone else to change the world is often a losing proposition and not a viable option.

These are both scary as well as exciting times. Ghandi said, " Be the change you want to see in the world." That quote means to me that it is not up to one leader to change the world. The time has come for all leaders throughout our nation to step up. The New Year brings with it endless possibilities for positive change. While the country's economic crisis might feel overwhelming on a grand scale, there are small steps that every individual can take on a daily basis to make a positive impact. While you might not be able to make a substantial impact at the national level, everyone can make a difference locally. From volunteering at your local shelter a few hours per month to mentoring underprivileged youth to running for a local council seat, every individual can help to create positive change for the future within their own community. One of the things I will be asking myself is this, "What can I do to make a difference in 2009?

Leaders take action. Anyone can sit back waiting for someone else to make a difference. Step up and take the lead.

Great Public Policy Day

Having worked for elected officials in the past, I was very anxious to see how the Washington process works. The speakers shared a lot of great information with us. It was fascinating to hear about things from the Native American point of view because it is clear to me that there are a lot of opportunities for improvement in that area.

I was very impressed with the great questions posed by all my fellow classmates. They are very informed on the issues. I came there to listen and learn because I am still trying to figure out how things really work around Snohomish County. Having lived in 3 states in the past 4 years, I find myself comparing the way things are there to the way things are here. To me this is an advantage in some aspects but a marked disadvantage in other ways. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that it really makes a difference when you do not live directly in the state capital of any state. I feel so out of the loop. I know that I have a lot of learning to do because if I plan to be a strong leader and agent of change then I need to know about the current issues and the way this government works so I can be an informed citizen.

Thank you Leadership Snohomish County for providing such great speakers.

Expressing Gratitude

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is this week!!! As Thanksgiving approaches my thoughts turn to the things that I am thankful for this year. I feel it is important to express gratitude to others. One thing I have learned from my experience in LSC so far is that leaders should let those around them know that they and their contributions are appreciated. I thought about some simple ways that I show appreciation. Here are five simple ways to express your gratitude this Thanksgiving:
1. Say "Thank You." When a colleague goes above and beyond, when your spouse completes a chore that he/she isn't usually assigned, when a friend lends a helping hand, show that you appreciate their efforts. Saying "thank you" is an often overlooked, but powerful, expression of gratitude that allows the recipient to know that they are valued. Two simple words that are worth so much.
2. Pick up the telephone. Do you have team members, friends or family sprinkled all over the country? A simple phone call this week wishing them a very happy Thanksgiving will go along way to letting them know that you value their presence in your life.
3. Extend a dinner invitation. Are you having a large gathering this Thanksgiving? Do you know a colleague or friend who might be alone for the holiday? Express your gratitude by inviting him/her to join you.
4. Offer to cover. Do you work in an industry that needs people to work over the upcoming holiday weekend? Or, do you know someone who is travelling for the holiday? If you don't already have established plans, show you appreciate the contributions of others by offering to cover holiday shifts. If you have plans but are not traveling, offer to cover for a few hours on Wednesday afternoon so that those traveling can hit the road a bit early.
5. Be present. If you are lucky enough to be spending Thanksgiving with those who are most important to you, the best way to show them that you are grateful for their presence in your life is to be fully present throughout the holiday. Leave the Blackberry in your briefcase, put the laptop away, turn off any unnecessary television and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Sharing your whole self with others, whether watching the football game together, engaging in meaningful conversation over dinner, or playing on the floor with the young ones, is the best method to show your gratitude this Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for this great program and I am very thankful that I was selected to be part of such a wonderful team of leaders. Happy Thanksgiving.

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."

The recent education day was very enlightening for me on multiple levels. Prior to my work at Boeing, I spent 7 years working for the Oklahoma State Department of Education in different capacities from School Auditor to Special Education Compliance. I will always have a special spot in my heart for all teachers because their job is truly one that requires a great degree of self-sacrifice. The examples we saw made it very clear to me that it truly does take a village to raise a child. Parents need to take an active role in all facets of education. Everyone needs to take a participatory role in education in one form or another. Life is not a spectator sport. One of my favorite quotes comes from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, " Knowing is not enough; We must apply. Willing is not enough; We must do." This experience in LSC will touch us all in different ways, I challenge each one of my co-leaders to pay it forward and apply their special talents in a way that will leave a lasting legacy. Although I enjoyed the entire day I found the site visit to Quilceda Elementary especially informative and inspiring. I also enjoyed the panel session held late in the day. Margot Helphand was once again our facilitator, taking the class on a tour of getting to know our own leadership styles. Margot has been initiating our Leadership Classes for the past ten years and she is truly a gem. There was lots of reflecting, sharing, and connecting. A highlight of the retreat was our dinner with the Leadership Snohomish County Board of Directors. More reflecting and connecting through a delicious dinner. I am relatively new to Snohomish County. LSC has been a great experience to learn about products, goods, and services that I never knew existed until LSC gave me the exposure. I have not volunteered in the past for an organization. I had an idea in my head of what it would be like to volunteer for an organization. My idea and reality have unfortunately not connected. This is not due to the lack of skills or ambition of the folks in our group. I was/am very impressed by the skills, creativity, leadership, and willingness to provide a high quality end product of our group members. It is good to know there are some folks out there trying to make a positive difference in the community. I am very greatful to LSC for the learning experience that is provided. I say THANK YOU to all of the students in the current LSC Class. See you all on 4/3.

greg

S.A.V.E. - What difference can you make?

If you remember, the topic for the first presentation team way back in December was about "running for office." Our recommendation was the creation of S.A.V.E. - Snohomish County Alliance for Voter Education. The purpose was to form a non-partisan review board to look into each candidate, the issues, their voting records, experience, etc and then create a piece that rates the candidates. Tim Krivanek and I are holding the first meeting of S.A.V.E. and we'd like you to join us. So, "save" the date for Tuesday, April 22nd. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at The Flying Pig. Please let me know if you plan to join us. I am inspired by the meaning of this work, and the vision of the founders and Board of LSC. This photo also speaks to my personal leadership values; being present, being willing to stretch through dark clouds, articulating a vision, letting people find their awe in what is possible, responsibly holding a structure for the "work" to happen, and aligning closely with others to do the work.

Community

Community....

"Don't ask what the world needs. I was honored to be selected to participate in such a great program. My experience with LSC has been nothing but positive. Learning about the different facets of Snohomish County has only enhanced my belief that we are a great community and our future is going to be amazing. If the LSC class of 2008 is any indication of the future.... watch out! We love Snohomish County and are devoted to making it an even better and stronger community as a whole and a role model not just to the state of Washington but all 50 states as well!
The professionals that make up the class of 2008 are truly one-of-a-kind!! While we joke about being the 'worst' class, we all know that we really are the BEST CLASS LSC has ever had!!!!

My Team worked on the Trailside Village Girls and Boys Club. Our entire team was feeling frustrated and the team member sitting with me was venting with me. All of a sudden, I realized that we had a great tool to turn to so I suggested my fellow team member dig out their LIFO and see what style was most preferred during adverse times. I was quite proud of myself for that suggestion.

But it was only on the drive home that night when I realized maybe I should take my own advice! I pulled out my LIFO the next day and looked at my most preferred style during adverse times and thought about ways in which I could act or react to the situation our project team was faced with. And guess what? It worked! It was a good reminder to step back, pay attention to what buttons were getting pushed and then look at the styles I use and how to balance the situation.

Thanks Leadership Snohomish County for the opportunity to take the LIFO. It was good to put it to practice and not let it sit in a binder gathering dust! I guess this is a good reminder that not all of our learning takes place during our once a month education days.

My First Class- Feb 7, 2008

Destiny can sometimes be full of good humor. My first day with the Leadership Class happened to be the "Health and Human Service Education Day". After spending much of the last 22 years in the field that has been my calling, I can only say that I took it as a nod from the outer reaches that I am here, as the new Executive Director of Leadership Snohomish County.
It was great to meet the class and very quickly I felt absorbed into the process and welcomed into project groups to talk about the personal journey.
I welcome all of you to our public class blog. I know there are many people who would enjoy reading along and feeling a connection to the Leadership Class and the personal experiences.
The purpose of the blog spot is to share our personal experiences and some of the ways that we are growing and stretching from the impact project work.
- Sarri
